                      collected the Pinhole Protractor Lab
                 Classwork  During class we went over the vertical rays of the Sun
                      packet period 2 we went over the pinhole protractor lab and period
                      3 students finished making the measurements for the pinhole
                      protractor lab.
                  Homework  Both classes should finish up the Ancient Greek
                       Astronomers Worksheet Period 3 needs to finish the pinhole
                       protractor lab and Both classes were reminded to attend the
                       DU Chamberlain Observatory Open House Saturday, 7:30.  The
                       requirement is worth 100 points and the paper is due Monday
                       Go to this site to print out the required questions and resources
                       from the Observatory information posted on the site. $1 to get into
                       the observatory, attach the ticked to the paper.  I will be there
                       with the HHS telescope.

                      Collected Ancient Greek Astronomers Worksheet and the
                           Observatory Assignments done over the weekend.
                      Classwork The Ancient Greek Astronomers Worksheet was
                           checked in class.  We discussed the use of the internet
                           site for checking on classwork and assignments when absent
                           and the use of the notebook stored in the box with the folders
                           and the handouts.  We also talked about the observatory and
                           the astrophoto taken last weekend with our telescope.  Finally
                           we began the simulated Galileo observations of the moons of
                           Jupiter and the predictions of various periods of revolution.
                      Homework  Read chapter 3 Period 3 will be turning in the Pin hole
                           Protractor Labs Tuesday.

                    Classwork  We continued our "field trip" viewing the moons of
                         Jupiter over a nine sequential day cycle, making daily
                         predictions about where our moon and the other moons would
                         be on the next night.  We even revised our hypothesis and made
                         new predictions.  We also reviewed Kepler's Laws by viewing

                    Homework  Students are to predict the period of revolution of each
                         of the Galilean moons to the nearest 0.1 of a day for tomorrow.
                         Chapter 3  should be finished reading.

                   Classwork Continued telescope field trip to replicate work done by
                        Galileo with Jupiters moons over 9 consecutive nights and the
                        work done by Kepler applying his third law.  We made 
                        measurements of the orbit radius # 9 for each of the 4 moons
                        and completed statistics  for # 7 and we did the calculations for
                        11 and 12.

                        questions and the conclusion.  We also converted the actual

                         positions relative to the earth. This included reviewing the lunar
                         phase terminology, planetary phases, positions, pm or am
                         visibility.  Usihg the actual planetary positions paper students
                         began to apply the concepts learned to the current status
                    Homework On each side of the handout list the planets shown
                         their current position as determined by the positions described
                         on yesterdays handout and the time of visibility.  tomorrow we'll
                         do the phase of each planet as seen from the earth. Telescope

                   Classwork  We went over last nights homework the planet positions
                         and viewing times (rise and set times) as predicted by the
                         planetary positions shown on the orbital placements of the
                         planets shown on the handout actual planet positions.
                         Then using the Skymap Day and Night position charts of the
                         planets we verified our answers.
                         We then went to the Inflatable planetarium for an instructional
                         period to review constellations, seasons, positional changes
                         and motion.

                         park beginning at 7:30 pm until 9 pm.  We'll be taking astro
                         photos about 8:45 tonight.

                  Handouts Galactic Stuff in Color
                  Collected nothing
                  Classwork demonstration filters and visual spectrum and star fields
                        with filters, explained how filtered images can be used to
                        determine the surface temperature of stars. Students worked on
                        measuring the angular diameter of the images to complete the
                        data table.
                  Homework  complete the data table and calculate the color index to
                         determine the star's surface temperature.  This requires a
                         calculator.

                  Collected Galactic Stuff in Color Lab
                  Classwork re-explained how to determine the color index and the
                        star color and color from it. Students finished the homework they
                        were assigned Friday.  I explained how to determine a
                        temperature range and an absolute temperature.for a specific
                        star. Period 2 did begin the Kirchoff's Law work during class.

                        Human Eye Resolution Lab due today also.
                 Classwork Prelab Converging Lens Students began the process of
                        determining the focal length of the lens and setting up the lens
                        optical bench marking 1F and 2F on both sides of the lens. The
                        objective is to determine the relationship between object distance
                        and image distance and to examine the properties of the image
                        as real virtual magnified, reduced, erect and inverted.  Look for
                        patterns in the data.  The lab will be completed tomorrow.
                  Homework The Telescope Primer packet worksheet is due tomorrow
                        and the lab should be done by the end of class.

               Classwork Explained Hertzsprung and Russell Diagrams:
                      main sequence, Giants, Supergiants, dwarfs and it captures the
                      steps of the life cycle of stars similar to a family portrait with the
                      infants, grandparent, great grandparent, and families.  Students
                      completed the chapter 18 test today. 
               Homework Read chapter 12 and 13 dealing with the life cycle of stars
                      We will be working on the internet tutorial.

               Classwork During class we went over the web assignment on Stellar
                      Evolution discussing blackholes, supernovas, neutron stars,
                      pulsars, companion stars, xray emissions and the Chandra
                      telescope  We then went to the computer lab to work on the
                      packet from the star life cycle tutorial.
              Homework.  Finish the star lifecycle packet, print out quiz 1 and 2 and
                      the 17 questions.

             Classwork  During class we went over the generalities of Fig 19-33
                     students.  We viewed 5 film clips about the life cycle of a star,
                     neutron stars, pulsars, blackholes, the Sun structure, stellar fusion
                     Students began work on the 19-33 worksheet.
             Homework Test Monday covering Life cycle of a star from the tutorial site
                     questions from the prequiz, quiz 1 and quiz 2 and the summation
                     quiz, plus the Fig 19-33 and worksheet plus the Stellar Evolution
                     with web and Star Formation and Lifetiimes Handout. The quiz will
                     be on Monday.  Complete the 19-33 worksheet from today for Fri
                     to be reviewed during class.

             Handout Planet Cards and Instruction sheet

             Classwork Explained the internet project to create a set of planet cards.
                    complete both sides of the cards - the back of the card will hav3e
                    the factual information entered on it.  The front of the card will
                    include the accurately drawn in axis of rotation, the equator at 90
                    degrees to the axis of rotation, the number of moons along the
                    equator, the number of rings if it has rings, the cloud bands,
                    unique features identifyiable to the specific planet. These cards may
                    be used on the final. Finish outside of class, this is the only day
                    in the computer lab to complete these cards.

             Homework Read the packet on meteors, observe the Geminid meteor
                    shower this week, peak is Thursday, increased numbers 2 days
                    before and after the peak.  It is known for its fireballs, best shower
                    of the year.  Quiz over the powerpoint and packet this week plus
                    the planet cards project.

            Homework:  The Review Packet is due on exam day,  but only Monday
                    will be used to go over it.  The Planet cards will be collected exam
                    day, the Hubble graph and Expansion of space activity will be
                    collected on final exam day. The take home planet properties quiz
                    is due on Monday.  Make up testing last day is Monday.
